I have never been overly interested in environmental issues or politics until recently. Through a combination of studying environmental science, passionate friends, feeling more connected with local and global events as a result of living in a city, and of course an undeniably incompetent liberal government getting voted into power, I developed a strong desire to contribute to the environmentalism movement in any way I could. Since volunteering for various organizations like ACF, The Greens and The Australia Institute, it has taught me a lot about grassroots movements and allowed my values to come into better focus, especially my convictions about the major flaws in our current “growth first, conservation later” neo-liberal capitalist economic system, and also the necessity to protect nature from these malevolent economic forces and mitigate the effects of climate change. It has also demonstrated to me the importance of grassroots movements in achieving the kind of structural change that most of us want to see in society. We clearly cannot rely on the politicians to reform anything of use to us or the environment, at least as long as they are slave to corporate lobbying and ruled by right wing ideology.
Why I'm joining Climb-it for Climate in 2015
The AYCC and Himalayan Climate Initiative do essential work in our global community, and promote values and ideas which will be key to us minimizing the damage caused by climate change.
